What to do in a pet emergency

Compassionate and comprehensive care when you need it most

You know your pet better than anybody else, so if you feel that they are displaying signs or behaviours that aren’t normal, it’s always a good idea to call your regular vet for advice. If they are not available, for instance in the middle of the night or on weekends, that’s where our emergency team come in.

Some of the common signs that a pet isn’t feeling well may include rapid breathing, lethargy, pale gums, weak pulse, excessive bleeding, seizures and more. If you’re in any doubt about their wellbeing, please call our emergency team on 1300 JCU VET (528 838) for advice about what to do next.

Common Pet Emergencies

A number of common emergencies presented to our hospital include pets ingesting household or plant toxins such as cooked bones, chocolate, human medicines, chemicals, insecticides and lilies. Townsville is home to a number of dangerous animals and sometimes our pets may be injured from a poisonous cane toad or a venomous snake bite or paralysis tick.

Accidents can happen when we least expect it, so it’s important for both you and your pet to stay calm. Once you decide to bring your pet to the hospital, ensure that you’re familiar with the route to our hospital and be sure to ask our team for directions. Don’t hesitate to let our team know if you require help moving your pet from the car into our hospital.

Be prepared

If you have your pet insurance policy/details available, please bring them along as you might be eligible for reimbursements. In addition to this, please let our vets know about any pre-existing medical conditions or historical information that may be useful during their treatment.

If we are treating multiple patients, our vets and nurses work on a triage system, where they will provide a quick medical assessment and measure your pet’s vital signs, to determine which pets require critical attention. We will always aim to stabilise patients by administering IV fluids, pain relief and medication, to ensure they feel safe and free from pain or discomfort.

What if it's not an emergency?

In the case of non-urgent veterinary services we always recommend that you consult with your regular veterinarian because they know your pet’s medical history well and you won’t need to worry about longer wait times/holding up pet emergencies.
